QUESTION: Do we need to buy some scuba gear before coming down to the Florida Keys? ? I figure the gear might be cheaper off the islands. ANSWER: Surprisingly, the scuba shops are very competitive in the Keys and you get more professional help with your selection. You may not need to buy any gear, as they can guide you at Tilden's to reef trips where the gear is included. They have everything and will help you with trip planning and gear if you need some.
There is no better place to learn to dive. We did it and what a thrill. You want to bone up on the scuba safety books before you even show up for the fist day. It puts you on top of things and will give you more confidence, just as the water clarity does too.
We rented a condo close to the Scuba Shop and could walk over for supplies. The Beach Club (4560 Overseas Highway) is good for scuba divers, as it is so Boater Friendly. You can call and make a reservation for a boat slip rental and they have a free boat ramp and free boat trailer parking.
